Machine Gun Kelly
Date / Time
Colson Baker’s rapid-fire lyrical talents earned him the nickname ‘Machine Gun Kelly’ or ‘MGK’ and helped him to shoot his way to the top of the hip hop world.
Cleveland-raised MGK used rapping to get him through a hard childhood with no mother. After releasing several mix tapes starting in 2009, he experienced a meteoric rise in late 2011 when his performance at SXSW was seen by Sean Combs. MGK signed with Comb's Bad Boy imprint that night and released the single "Wild Boy" on the label that same year. MGK's debut album, Lace Up, landed in 2012.
In 2013, MGK released The Black Flag mixtape, featuring likes of French Montana and Wiz Khalifa. Its success saw MGK off on a world-wide international tour, including his first visit to Australia.
In 2015 he released General Admission, a dark, autobiographical LP. The album peaked at number four on the Billboard 200 and topped the R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. However, the 2016 duet ‘Bad Things” with ex-Fifth Harmony member Camila Cabello ushered in his first #1 hit on Pop radio and a Billboard Award nomination for Top Rap Collaboration, and truly cemented his name in the hip hop history books.
